Abstract: The present invention provides a hepatoprotective herbal composition comprising as the active ingredient a hydroethanolic seed extract of Mimosa pudica Linn. obtained by sequential Soxhlet extraction of pulverized seeds with petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and ethanol-water (70:30) and concentration at 50–60 °C. The composition contains flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, carbohydrates and proteins as the principal bioactive constituents and is formulated into an oral pharmaceutical dosage form. The composition exhibits significant, dose-dependent hepatoprotective activity in albino rats subjected to isoniazid-induced hepatotoxicity, restoring elevated levels of SGOT, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin and re-establishing normal hepatic histoarchitecture, with efficacy comparable to the standard polyherbal formulation Liv-52. The invention also provides a reproducible, scalable method for the preparation of the said composition and its use as an adjuvant therapy for ameliorating drug-induced liver injury, particularly in patients receiving anti-tubercular treatment.
