Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a polymer ring core fiber (100) for terahertz communication. The fiber (100) includes a ring core region (10) defined by an inner radius (r1) and an outer radius (r2), wherein the ring core region (10) is configured to support transmission of vector modes and orbital angular momentum modes in a terahertz frequency range. An outer depressed cladding region (20) surrounds the ring core region (10) and includes struts (30) configured to provide mechanical support for the ring core region (10). The struts (30) may be circular struts or straight struts. The fiber (100) substrate comprises a low-loss polymer material selected from cyclo-olefin copolymer or cyclo-olefin polymer. The fiber (100) supports stable transmission of orbital angular momentum modes across a bandwidth from 0.3 THz to 1.2 THz with mode separation between constituent vector eigenmodes sufficient to prevent mode coupling. There are four fiber designs in the present invention and the modal analysis indicates that the OAM modes will exhibit a broadly similar propagation behavior across all four proposed fiber designs.
