Abstract: Abstract Disclosed is a portable detection device for detecting hexavalent chromium in a sample. The device includes a housing having a cover and a microfluidic plate, a sample inlet, and a microfluidic channel extending to a reaction region. A chromium-reactive sensing strip positioned at the reaction region includes a protective mesh layer, a chromium-reactive reagent layer, an absorbent substrate, and a structural backing support. The microfluidic channel delivers the sample to the chromium- reactive reagent layer for development of a chromium-dependent optically detectable response. A sealing gasket disposed between the cover and the microfluidic plate confines at least part of the fluidic region extending toward the reaction region. An optical window formed in the cover is aligned with the reaction region to permit observation of the optically detectable response developed by the chromium-reactive sensing strip.
