MUMBAI, India, Oct. 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641121082 A) filed by Rajalakshmi Engineering Collegeautonomous on October 09, 2026, for Portable Microplastic Water Scanner Device.
Inventor includes Dr. M. Thangamani.
The application for the patent was published on October 23, 2026, under issue no. 43/2026.
Abstract: This specification describes a portable handheld apparatus for detecting, counting, sizing, and classifying microplastic particles in water within 60-120 seconds. A measured water volume passes through a microfluidic channel (130) with hydrodynamic focusing (170) and is illuminated sequentially using five multi-wavelength LEDs spanning 365-850 nm. A CMOS image sensor (310) captures multi-angle scattering and autofluorescence to generate a seven-channel optical fingerprint for each particle. A GPU- 705 enabled microprocessor (410) uses a convolutional neural network to identify polymer type, particle size, and confidence score. The system classifies polyethylene, polypropylene, PET, polystyrene, PVC, polyamide, and other polymers while excluding mineral, biological, and cellulosic particles. A statistics module (460) generates particle counts, size distribution, polymer breakdown, and contamination severity. A calibration system (600) uses reference beads and blank- water baselines. Smartphone/cloud integration 710 enables GPS logging, mapping, trend analysis, and reporting. The weatherproof device weighs under 800 grams, requiring no laboratory.
