MUMBAI, India, Oct. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641118965 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Madras Iit Madras on October 05, 2026, for Pouch Electrochemical Device And Method For Selective Lithium Metal Recovery And Accumulation From Battery Leachate.

Inventors include Nitin Muralidharan; and Lakshmi Narayana Manickavasagam.

The application for the patent was published on October 09, 2026, under issue no. 41/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The present disclosure relates to a compact pouch-type electrochemical device and method for selectively extracting and accumulating lithium metal from leach liquor derived from spent lithium-ion battery black mass. The device comprises a counter electrode configured to contact the black-mass leach liquor and facilitate an anodic reaction, a lithium-accumulation electrode configured to deposit and accumulate lithium metal, and a lithium-ion-conducting solid electrolyte positioned between the electrodes. An organic electrolyte is provided on the lithium-accumulation-electrode side of the solid electrolyte, either directly or within a separator positioned between the solid electrolyte and lithium-accumulation electrode. The lithium-accumulation electrode, organic electrolyte, separator when present, and solid electrolyte are enclosed within a hermetically sealed pouch-cell housing. The counter electrode, solid electrolyte, separator, and lithium-accumulation electrode are arranged substantially parallel in a stacked configuration. The disclosed device enables selective lithium-ion transport, electrochemical reduction, and efficient accumulation of lithium metal from battery-recycling leach liquor.
