Abstract: A pre-compressed substrate insert (10) replenishes settled growing medium (38) around an established plant (44) in a container (32). A body (12) of dry, compressed, hydration-expandable growing medium, preferably coir, has an outer peripheral surface (18) shaped to the container (32) and a central void (20) for the stem (46). The body (12) is installed laterally around the stem (46), being formed either of discrete segments (22, 24), which may be unequal for access from one side, or as a unitary body with a lateral entry channel (28) from its periphery to the central void (20). Placed on the settled surface (40) and watered in situ, the body (12) expands, closes its joints or channel, conforms to the container wall (34) and the stem (46), and refills the headspace (42) without the plant (44) being lifted or repotted and without shovelling or tamping.
