Abstract: ABSTRACT PREDICTIVE TRAFFIC INSTABILITY STABILIZATION SYSTEM WITH ADAPTIVE MULTI-FACTOR QUANTIFICATION A method (100) for proactive suppression of phantom traffic jams comprises acquiring per-lane sensor data including speed, acceleration, and time headway (102); classifying a current traffic regime as free-flow, transitional, or congested based on mean speed and speed standard deviation, and setting a regime-specific weight vector (104); computing a multi-factor instability score as a regime-weighted sum of spatial variances of speed, acceleration, and headway, wherein a speed-variance weight dominates in the free- flow regime and a headway-variance weight dominates in the congested regime (106); forecasting a future instability value and prediction confidence score using a sliding-window temporal prediction model (108); evaluating a decision gate (110) triggering intervention when predicted instability exceeds an intervention threshold and prediction confidence exceeds a confidence threshold, with magnitude-only triggering in the congested regime; when satisfied, broadcasting target speed adjustments (112); and feeding updated measurements back to complete a closed loop (114).
