The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the preparation of 6-keto-progesterone, a keto-functionalized synthetic steroid derivative obtained by oxidation of Progesterone using pyridinium dichromate (PDC), and its evaluation for antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains by the Kirby-Bauer agar well diffusion method. The compound was tested at three concentrations (25 µg, 50 µg, and 100 µg) against four clinical E. coli strains. Results demonstrated that 6-keto- progesterone exhibited dose-dependent antibacterial activity, with a zone of inhibition of 10 mm at 100 µg against three of the four tested strains (EC08-PRGL/042, EC08-PRGL/060, and EC08-PRGL-STD), while no inhibition was observed at 25 µg and 50 µg. The introduction of an oxo group at the C-6 position of the steroid ring confers distinct antimicrobial properties, making 6-keto-progesterone a promising candidate for the development of novel antibacterial agents. This patent encompasses the novel synthesis route, the antimicrobial screening methodology, and the therapeutic potential of 6-keto progesterone as an antibacterial steroid derivative.
