The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a multifunctional biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol-based removable film and coating composition for fruit preservation applications. The invention comprises a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix integrated with a citric acid–choline chloride deep eutectic solvent (DES), punicalagin-rich Punica-derived bioactive compounds, glycerol, and Tween 80. The film is prepared through a solvent-casting process followed by controlled drying to obtain a transparent, flexible, peelable, and mechanically stable biodegradable coating. The developed PDESP film exhibits enhanced antioxidant activity, broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, ultraviolet-blocking capability, reduced moisture adsorption, and improved flexibility. The coating effectively reduces oxidative degradation, microbial contamination, moisture loss, shriveling, and physicochemical deterioration of fruits during ambient storage conditions. The invention further provides an easily removable coating suitable for climacteric and non-climacteric fruits including sapota and grapes. The developed technology offers an environmentally friendly and consumer-compatible active packaging system for extending postharvest fruit shelf life.
