Abstract: The present disclosure provides a method for Doppler compensation in a satellite communication system. The method comprises computing, at a ground station, a Doppler shift and a Doppler drift of a satellite using ephemeris data. The method further comprises performing initial coarse Doppler compensation on a transmit signal by tuning a radio frequency (RF) local oscillator based on the computed Doppler shift. The method further comprises performing fine Doppler compensation on the transmit signal by baseband processing to compensate for residual Doppler accumulating due to the Doppler drift during a satellite pass. When the residual Doppler exceeds a baseband sampling limit, accumulated residual Doppler is handed over to the RF local oscillator for coarse compensation and the baseband compensation is reset. The compensated transmit signal is transmitted to the satellite, enabling narrowed frequency search range and faster acquisition at the satellite. (Figure 1)
