Abstract: Malnutrition case rates are heavily driven by socio-demographic and environmental factors. Research highlights that marginalized regions, maternal malnourishment, food insecurity, and a lack of proper sanitation are major risk factors. Severe acute malnutrition affects roughly 12 to 19 million children under five globally, contributing to over 400,000 child deaths annually. In India, prevalence has historically been measured through the National Family Health Surveys and localized studies, often showing higher rates in rural and aspirational districts. In India, surveys indicate an alarming severe acute malnutrition prevalence of up to 7.7%, with localized rates fluctuating between 1.7% and 6.2% depending on the region. Children suffering from malnutrition are highly vulnerable to infections and face a mortality risk 9 to 11 times higher than well-nourished children. A lack of sufficient protein and vital micronutrients causes the body's immune system to weaken. As the immune system fails, the individual becomes highly vulnerable to chronic infections. These infections trigger metabolic disturbances and increased energy expenditure, accelerating the progression to severe malnutrition.
