Abstract: A method for the manufacture of sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate, wherein said method comprises a limestone calcining step in a limekiln to produce lime (CaO) and a gas comprising carbon dioxide (CO2), wherein said carbon dioxide is used to manufacture sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, and wherein said limestone calcining step uses limestone and a carbonaceous combustible, wherein the said carbonaceous combustible comprises biochar, and the biochar comprises at most 50 % by weight of volatile matter on a dry base.
