Abstract: A programmable biomagnetic phantom system for calibration and validation of magnetocardiographic sensor arrays is a system utilizing planar coil arrays to synthesize and mimic complex, localized biomagnetic fields such as those produced by the human heart or brain at a sensor plane comprising a planar coil array (20) of a plurality of independently driven coils mounted on a substrate (26); a multi-channel current driver (16) coupled to said coils; a multi-channel digital-to-analog converter (14) coupled to said current driver (16); a waveform controller (12) coupled to said converter (14); and a host computer (10) configured to compute per-coil current waveforms by regularized least-squares inversion of a coil response matrix against a target biomagnetic field map, such that, when said current waveforms are applied to said coils, the resulting magnetic field at a sensor plane separated from the substrate (26) by a standoff distance approximates the target biomagnetic field map.
