Abstract: ABSTRACT Pyrene-Tetrazine Fluorescent Probe for Detecting Plant-Emitted Volatile Organic Compounds A fluorogenic probe compound for detecting volatile organic compounds is disclosed. The probe comprises a polycyclic aromatic fluorophore, a linker moiety covalently attached to the polycyclic aromatic fluorophore, and a 1,2,4,5-tetrazine ring covalently attached to the linker moiety bearing a substituent at the 6-position. The polycyclic aromatic fluorophore is in electronic communication with the 1,2,4,5-tetrazine ring through the linker moiety such that fluorescence emission from the polycyclic aromatic fluorophore is quenched in an unreacted state. The 1,2,4,5-tetrazine ring is configured to undergo inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder cycloaddition with a volatile organic compound analyte bearing a carbon-carbon double bond or a carbon-carbon triple bond, thereby consuming the 1,2,4,5-tetrazine ring and generating a fluorescence turn-on response. The probe addresses the detection of plant stress-induced volatile organic compounds for agricultural monitoring (Fig. 3).
