Abstract: ABSTRACT QUINOLINE-BASED HYDRAZONE CHEMOSENSOR FOR COLORIMETRIC DETECTION OF CHROMIUM(III) AND ALUMINIUM(III) IONS A compound of Formula I (100) having the general structure Ar-NH-N=CH-Q, wherein Q is a quinolin-4-yl group and Ar is a phenyl group optionally substituted by one to three C1-C4 alkyl groups. The compound of Formula I (100) forms a coordination complex (300) with a trivalent metal ion (302) selected from chromium(III) and aluminium(III) in a 1:1 molar ratio, wherein the trivalent metal ion (302) is coordinated through a quinoline nitrogen atom, an imine nitrogen atom, and a hydrazone nitrogen atom. A colorimetric chemosensor composition (200) comprises the compound (100) and an organic solvent (202), exhibiting an absorption maximum in a range of 385 nm to 395 nm in a free state. A sensing article (400) comprises a solid substrate (402) and a sensing layer (404) comprising the compound (100) immobilised thereon. A method of colorimetrically detecting chromium(III) or aluminium(III) ions comprises contacting a sample (500) with the compound (100) to form a metal-ligand complex (300) and detecting a change in optical absorption in a range of 480 nm to 500 nm or an accompanying visible colour change.
