MUMBAI, India, Aug. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631007304 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Guwahati on January 24, 2026, for Radiation Shielding Concrete Composition And Method Of Preparation Thereof.

Inventors include Sanchit Saxena; and Dr. Hrishikesh Sharma.

The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a radiation-shielding concrete composition comprising a cementitious binder fraction comprising ordinary Portland cement and silica fume, a coarse aggregate fraction comprising hematite aggregate, a fine aggregate fraction comprising a boron-rich additive, tungsten oxide microparticles, water, and a polycarboxylate ether-based superplasticizer. The hematite aggregate constitutes 25 wt.% to 100 wt.% of a total weight of the coarse aggregate fraction, the boron-rich additive constitutes 10 wt.% to 50 wt.% of a total weight of the fine aggregate fraction, and the tungsten oxide microparticles constitute 0.5 wt.% to 3 wt.% of a total weight of the cementitious binder fraction. The hematite aggregate, the boron-rich additive, and the tungsten oxide microparticles provide attenuation of gamma radiation, thermal neutron radiation, and fast neutron radiation. The radiation-shielding concrete composition exhibits structural-grade compressive strength and is suitable for nuclear containment structures, radiation-shielding enclosures, radioactive waste storage facilities, and other radiation-intensive structural applications.
