Abstract: An AI-based driver fatigue detection and adaptive alert system is proposed to enhance road safety by preventing accidents caused by driver drowsiness and reduced attentiveness during vehicle operation. The driver is continuously monitored through the camera-based driver monitoring unit, and analyse multiple fatigue-related parameters of the driver such as the eye closure duration, blinking frequency, yawning activity and the movement of the driver's head will be determined using computer vision and image processing techniques. On the bases of the behavioural data, the driver will be categorized into four different severity levels including mild, moderate, severe, and critical. According to the fatigue level of driver, an alert system generates graduated warning signals like audio alarms, and vibration-based alerts. In addition, there is an escalation mechanism that monitor driver response after a warning and if no response has been detected within a pre-defined time interval, it will automatically increase the intensity of alarms. The proposed system is scalable, cost-effective, and intelligent transportation safety system that can be deployed in commercial vehicles.
