Abstract: According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, a decentralized seat occupancy monitoring and access control system is configured to perform seat-level sensing, status indication, and communication in a distributed manner. The system includes a plurality of seats, each incorporating a seat mounted hardware module having a microcontroller equipped with a wireless network interface, non-volatile memory, and a power input. The microcontroller is operatively coupled to a distance sensor and a motion sensor for detecting physical parameters associated with occupancy. Each seat further comprises a display unit interfaced through a display driver, a plurality of light indicators, and an audible transducer selected from a buzzer or a loudspeaker. A backend service is communicatively coupled to the plurality of seats through a wireless network using a message-oriented publish/subscribe protocol, and an administrator interface and user applications are coupled to the backend service to support system-level monitoring and interactions.
