Abstract: This project proposes a Real-Time Traffic Signal Countdown System for Google Maps to improve traffic awareness and help drivers make better travel decisions. Currently, most map applications such as Google Maps show traffic congestion but do not display the exact countdown of traffic signals at intersections. Because of this, drivers do not know how long they must wait at a red signal, which can lead to unnecessary delays and inefficient driving. The proposed system uses Internet of Things (IoT) devices installed at traffic signals to collect real-time information. These devices read the signal light status (red, yellow, or green) and the remaining time of the signal. The collected data is continuously sent to a cloud server through internet protocols such as MQTT or HTTPS. This enables real-time transmission of signal timing information from multiple intersections. Once the data reaches the cloud server, it is stored and processed to maintain the latest signal countdown for each intersection. The system also applies machine learning techniques to analyze traffic conditions and predict possible traffic delays. Based on historical data and traffic flow patterns, the model can estimate how long it will take for vehicles to clear an intersection after the signal turns green. The processed data is then delivered to a map application using a map API such as Map box or Google Maps. The application displays a live countdown timer directly on the map at each intersection, allowing users to see when the signal will change and how long they need to wait. The information is updated continuously in real time to ensure accuracy. This system can help drivers reduce waiting time, improve route planning, and increase overall traffic efficiency. In the future, the proposed solution can support smart city traffic management, enabling authorities to monitor intersections, analyze traffic patterns, and make better decisions for urban transportation systems.
