Abstract: The present invention relates to forensic casting materials. Conventional casting materials such as Plaster of Paris harden irreversibly and cannot be reused, causing material waste and recurring cost. The invention provides a reversible casting composition (100) comprising 60–80% w/w calcium sulfate hemihydrate (102), 5–10% w/w of a water-soluble polymeric binder (104) such as polyvinyl alcohol, 1–3% w/w of a setting regulator (106) such as sodium citrate, and 5–10% w/w of a particulate strength enhancer (108) such as silicon dioxide. The hardened cast, after documentation, is disintegrated by an aqueous chelating reversal agent (110) such as EDTA solution and recovered by filtration and dehydration as a reusable anhydrous powder. A method (300) of reusable impression recovery and a casting kit are also provided. The invention is useful in crime scene investigation and forensic training.
