Abstract: The invention relates to a safety device (10) for a surge protection device (12). The safety device (10) has a housing (16) in which a horn gap (24) is arranged, which has two electrodes (26, 28) which are separated from each other by a gap (32) in an ignition section (30). The safety device (10) has an adjustment mechanism (40) which is set up to increase the gap (32) between the electrodes (26, 28) and/or an ignition gap (39) to increase a dielectric strength of the safety device (10). The adjustment mechanism (40) is adapted to be actuated manually or is coupled to a trip mechanism (64) which is set up to automatically trip the adjustment mechanism (40) as a result of at least one tripping event.
