Abstract: The present invention relates to a self-cleaning solar photovoltaic panel system (100) having automated dust detection. The system comprises a photovoltaic panel (102) having an exposed photovoltaic surface (104), a dust-detection arrangement (108), a processing unit (114), a controller (116) and an automated cleaning assembly (118). The dust-detection arrangement generates at least one signal representative of a dust condition associated with the photovoltaic surface. The processing unit processes the signal to determine a dust-accumulation condition (140), and the controller compares the determined condition with a cleaning criterion (142). Upon satisfaction of the cleaning criterion, the controller activates the automated cleaning assembly to remove particulate matter from at least a portion of the photovoltaic surface. In an embodiment, a post-cleaning dust condition is determined to verify cleaning and selectively initiate an additional cleaning operation. The system thereby provides condition-responsive automated cleaning of photovoltaic panels based on detected surface contamination.
