MUMBAI, India, Aug. 10 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641080431 A) filed by Velammal Engineering College on June 30, 2026, for Self-Healing Multifunctional Nanocomposite Coating For Enhanced Corrosion And Thermal Protection.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a multifunctional self-healing nanocomposite coating composition and a method for its preparation to protect metallic substrates against corrosion, thermal degradation, and niecKanical dam age. The coating comprises an epoxy polymermatrixreinforcedvvith' grapKene^oxide nanosheets, hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets, silica nanoparticles, a silane coupling agent, and microcapsules containing a bio-based healing agent. Upon mechanical damage, the microcapsules rupture and release the healing agent, autonomously repairing microcracks and restoring the protective barrier. The synergistic action of the nanofillers enhances corrosion resistance, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and adhesion to the substrate. The coating is prepared by nanoparticle functionalization, homogeneous mixing, incorporation of microcapsules, coating deposition, and curing. The invention is suitable for applications in marine structures, pipelines, bridges, aerospace, automotive, renewable energy systems, and other industrial metallic components requiring long-term protection.
