Abstract: Self-Regenerating Microbial Biofilter for Air and Water Purification ABSTRACT 10-Jun-2026/85871/202641071802/Form 2(Title Page) The present invention concerns a novel microbial biofilter system which has the capacity to simultaneously purify both air and water using engineered microbial consortia,, bio-responsive___ ___ ____ nanostructured carrier matrices and autonomous regeneration mechanisms. The invention is based on a multi-layer biofiltration architecture that uses immobilized beneficial microorganisms capable of dealing with pollutants, including organic pollutants, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pathogenic microorganisms, heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues, dyes, and emerging contaminants present in both gaseous and aqueous environments. One of the major innovations of the proposed system is the inclusion of the smart microbial regeneration chamber, which continuously monitors microbial viability, contaminant load, biofilm thickness, nutrient availability, and purification efficiency with embedded biosensors. The system works automatically on a real-time basis, depending on feedback it receives, and implements the following processes to restore filtration performance without any manual effort and without changing filters: Micro-dosing of nutrients, balancing of oxygen, enhancement of microbial population, restructuring of biofllms, etc. The invention also introduces biodegradable bio-carriers with nano- porous structures that are functionalized with natural antimicrobial peptides and pollutant binding biomolecules to improve the capture of pollutants and microbial activity. Optimization of regeneration cycles by a machine learning module to predict biofilter degradation trend and to maximize purification efficiency and the operational life of the biofilter. Apart from this, the system is also based on a carbon sequestration compartment for converting the captured pollutants into environment friendly biomass and biofertilizer by-products. The proposed self-regenerating biofilter enables continuous, low-maintenance, eco-friendly, energy-efficient and pure purification of industrial facilities, healthcare facilities, smart buildings, wastewater treatment facilities, agriculture and domestic applications. The invention integrates cutting-edge microbiology, biotechnology, biosensing, and intelligent automation that greatly enhances the purification efficiency, lowers operational expenses, cuts down on waste generation, and offers a sustainable solution for long-term environmental remediation and pollution control.
