Inventors include Ms. S. Priyavarthini; Ms. Suba Sri S; S. Sowmiya S; and Ms. Sathya Sri S.
The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.
Abstract: Healthcare Workers are often exposed to potentially contaminated fluids during patient care, while conventional surgical gloves mainly provide physical protection and do not provide a visual indication of contamination. This project proposes a Smart Biodegradable Infection Detection Glove incorporating a low-cost, battery-free _colorimetr-ic-biosensor—into-a-nitrile surgi-cat glove. Tile sensing system comprises an absorbent layer and a colorimetric sensing layer containing CPRG (chlorophenol red-13-D-galactopyranoside), which can produce a visible colour response in the presence of selected bacterial enzyme activity. The sensor is designed to provide a simple visible early-warning indication without requiring electronic circuits, batteries, smartphones, or external devices. Biodegradable materials such as paper, PVA, or chitosan can be incorporated into the sensing region to reduce the environmental impact of disposable components. The prototype will be tested for colour response, fluid wicking, adhesion, flexibility, and durability in controlled laboratory conditions. The proposed glove is an early-warning contamination indicator rather than a medical diagnostic device, with potential applications in hospitals, wound care, laboratories, and other healthcare environments.
