MUMBAI, India, Aug. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611076124 A) filed by Tasneem Sakinatul Ain; Saima Sultan; Owais Gowhar; and Jawaaz Ahmad on June 19, 2026, for Smart Dental Handpiece With Real-Time Enamel Hardness Feedback.

Inventors include Tasneem Sakinatul Ain; Saima Sultan; Owais Gowhar; and Jawaaz Ahmad.

The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a smart dental handpiece configured to provide real-time tissue characterization during dental drilling procedures. The handpiece comprises a housing, a handpiece head, a cutting bur driven by a turbine or micromotor, one or more acoustic sensors, one or more vibration sensors, and a processing unit. Acoustic emissions and vibration signatures generated at a bur-tooth interaction region are continuously acquired and analyzed using signal processing and machine-learning-based classification techniques to distinguish between enamel, dentin, and carious tissue. A tissue transition detection module identifies transitions between different tissue types and activates a real-time feedback generation module. The feedback module provides visual, audible, and haptic indications through an LED feedback ring, speaker, and haptic actuator to assist a practitioner during drilling procedures. The invention may further comprise wireless communication, calibration, self-diagnostic, irrigation, and power management subsystems. The invention enables selective tissue removal, improves treatment precision, preserves healthy tooth structure, and enhances clinical safety and procedural outcomes in dental applications.
