Abstract: Smart nanostructured materials for the selective adsorption and separation of pollutants from aqueous solutions are disclosed. The material comprises a nanostructured support of high specific surface area, such as a metal oxide nanostructure, carbon-based nanomaterial, metal-organic framework, or mesoporous material, and a plurality of surface functional groups selected to bind preferentially to at least one target pollutant, including chelating groups of high affinity toward target heavy metal ions and molecularly imprinted recognition cavities templated to a target molecule. A separation-conferring component, notably an integrated magnetic material, enables recovery of the pollutant-laden material from the solution by application of a magnetic field. The material may be stimulus-responsive, adsorbing under a first condition and releasing under a second condition of altered pH or temperature, and is regenerable by an eluant that recovers the pollutant in concentrated form and restores adsorption capacity over repeated cycles. Methods of synthesizing the material and of treating contaminated water therewith are also disclosed.
