Abstract: A smart near-field communication-based asset tracking, recovery, and lending management system (100) is disclosed. The system (100) comprises a passive near-field communication tag (102), a client application (104), a recovery webpage interface (106), a cloud backend (108), and a notification module (110). The passive near-field communication tag (102), before initialization, stores only a globally unique identifier. The client application (104) reads the globally unique identifier and transmits the same to the cloud backend (108). The cloud backend (108) verifies whether the globally unique identifier is unclaimed, generates a cloud identification code, links the cloud identification code with a user account and an item record, and permits writing of only a secure short uniform resource locator into the passive near-field communication tag (102). Upon scanning by a finder device, the recovery webpage interface (106) enables app-less recovery, while a privacy rule engine (422) controls disclosure of owner-related information.
