MUMBAI, India, June 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641069320 A) filed by Pes College Of Engineering on June 03, 2026, for Smart Retractable Inter-Platform Pedestrian Bridge With Sensor-Based Alignment And Fail-Safe Actuation.

Inventors include Dr. Mahesh Koti; Mr. Srinath M. S.; Mr. Ravikumar M.; Ms. Poojashree M. P.; Mr. Chandrashekar M.; and Mr. Kadesh Irappa Marennavar.

The application for the patent was published on June 12, 2026, under issue no. 24/2026.

Abstract: A smart retractable inter-platform pedestrian bridge system is disclosed for safe controlled crossing between adjacent railway/metro platforms. A retractable bridge span is mounted on a first platform and is extendable across the track gap to a receiving dock on a second platform using an actuation unit comprising an electromechanical or hydraulic drive. A guide and locking mechanism aligns and locks the span with the receiving dock. A sensor suite includes train-detection sensors, position/encoder sensors, alignment sensors, and obstruction and load sensors. A control unit executes an interlocked state machine that permits deployment only when safe conditions are satisfied, including absence of trains in a protected track section and closure of interlocked barrier gates on both platforms. Once locked, pedestrian signals permit crossing; if unsafe conditions occur, gates lock and the bridge retracts or remains secured. Fail-safe features include emergency stop, manual override, and emergency retraction. The system reduces unauthorized track crossing and improves passenger safety and flow without large civil construction. (Accompanied Figure No. 1)
