The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION Title: SMART TRAY-RETURN KIOSK: AN ADAPTABLE DISTRIBUTED-ARCHITECTURE MODULAR WASTE SEGREGATION SYSTEM FOR HIGH-DENSITY ENVIRONMENTS The present invention relates to an autonomous waste segregation and tray-clearing kiosk designed for high-density environments such as commercial food courts, quick-service restaurants and institutional cafeterias. The system incorporates a multi-zone physical architecture featuring a central staging platform (101) for soiled trays, a lower storage cavity (102) for stacking empty trays, a manual wet-waste disposal chute (103) for liquid pre-diversion, and an automated sorting chamber (105). Individual waste items are manually transferred one by one into the sorting chamber, where a camera (109), aided by a continuous LED illumination bridge (108), captures visual data. To guarantee zero-latency operation, the system utilises a decoupled distributed dual-microcontroller architecture. An offline, edge-computing microcontroller (206) executes an adaptable machine-vision model to classify items into configurable waste streams and drives precision stepper motors (214, 215) to direct the waste into dedicated internal compartments (111) accessible via front-opening doors (106). Simultaneously, an independent instrumentation microcontroller (201) records itemised mass via integrated load cells (203) and transmits real-time telemetry to a cloud database (217) for automated regulatory compliance reporting. The system supports dual operational workflows — enabling rapid waste clearing by housekeeping personnel while optionally utilising a front-facing digital display (110) to dispense gamified promotional rewards to self-bussing consumers.
