Abstract: The increasing generation of municipal solid waste due to rapid urbanization has created significant challenges in waste management. Improper segregation of waste at the source leads to environmental pollution, inefficient recycling, and health risks. The Smart Waste Management System – Wet and Dry Waste Separator is designed to automate the process of waste segregation, ensuring efficient handling of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. The proposed system uses a moisture sensor, microcontroller (Arduino), and an automated separation mechanism to distinguish between wet and dry waste. When waste is placed into the system, the moisture sensor detects its moisture content. Based on the sensor output, the microcontroller controls a servo motor or mechanical diverter to direct the waste into the appropriate collection bin. The system can also include smart features such as automatic lid operation, bin- level monitoring using ultrasonic sensors, and alert notifications when the bins are full. Automatic segregation minimizes human involvement, improves hygiene, and reduces the risk of disease caused by manual waste handling. Proper separation of wet and dry waste enhances composting of biodegradable materials and increases the recycling potential of dry waste such as plastic, paper, glass, and metal. This helps reduce landfill waste, conserves natural resources, and supports sustainable environmental management. The proposed system is suitable for homes, educational institutions, offices, hospitals, public places, and smart city applications. It offers a simple, cost-effective, and reliable solution for improving waste management practices while promoting environmental awareness. By encouraging waste segregation at the source, the system contributes to cleaner surroundings, efficient resource utilization, and a healthier ecosystem. The Smart Waste Management System provides an innovative approach to modern waste disposal and supports the development of sustainable and eco-friendly communities.
