Abstract: A flexible rack-and-pinion mechanism comprises vertebral rack segments, each having an involute toothed face with eight teeth of module m = 2 mm, a convex ball- joint head of radius 11 mm protruding 9 mm at one end, and a concave socket recess of radius 11.15 mm and depth 13 mm at the other. Adjacent segments connect with 0.15 mm radial clearance, permitting up to 15° yaw and 10° pitch articulation while maintaining mesh with a traversing pinion. Guide rails engage lateral grooves to define a planar, helical or curved transmission path. Selectively actuatable locking mechanisms: a friction collar, shape-memory-alloy ring or pneumatic bladder — rigidise individual joints.
