MUMBAI, India, June 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641050501 A) filed by Kalasalingam Academy Of Research And Education on April 21, 2026, for Sparc-Waste: Solar-Powered Autonomous Reactor For Human Waste Sterlization And Conversion In Space.

Inventors include A. Lawrence Sahaya Sundar; and Dr. K. Vijayakumar.

The application for the patent was published on June 12, 2026, under issue no. 24/2026.

Abstract: Title: SPARC-WASTE- SOLAR-POWERED AUTONOMOUS REACTOR FOR HUMAN WASTE STERILIZATION AND CONVERSION IN SPACE This invention relates to a SPARC-Waste-Solar-Powered Autonomous Reactor for Human Waste Sterilization and Conversion in Space. It typically includes a VacuumAssisted Intake Interface (1), an Airlock and Hermetic Transfer Valve (2), a Solar 10 Thermal Concentrator (3), a Rotating Sterilization Drum (4), an UV-C Germicidal Irradiation Array (5), a Moisture Extraction and Desiccant Module (6), a Bioconversion Reactor (7), a Gas Separation and Storage Unit (8), a High-Pressure Hydraulic Press (9), an Autonomous Control and Automation System (1 0), a Solar Power Supply Unit (11), a Thermal Insulation Jacket (12). The primary advantage of SPARC-Waste is its 15 ability to provide a fully autonomous, gravity-independent, and zero-utility sanitation solution that transforms hazardous human waste into sterile, reusable structural materials and energy using only renewable solar power. The primary application of SPARC-Waste lies in its ability to provide autonomous, closed-loop sanitation and resource recovery for long-duration space missions and lunar/Martian habitats by 20 transforming biological waste into sterile structural materials and renewable energy.
