Abstract: The invention relates to a stack handling device (1), by means of which, during a depositing process, a depositing stack (10) containing at least one storage goods carrier (4) can be put into storage at any location in a stack (2) of storage goods carriers (4) that are stacked directly one on top of the other or, during a retrieval process, a retrieving stack (12) likewise containing at least one storage goods carrier (4) can be taken out of storage from any location in the stack (2). A stack handling device (1) has a stack lifting device (14) in order to raise a part (6) of the stack from the remaining stack (8). The depositing stack (10) is deposited at the top of the remaining stack (8) or the stack (2), and the retrieving stack (12) is removed from the top of the remaining stack (8) or the stack (2). In order to remove the retrieving stack (12) or in order to deposit the depositing stack (10), a loading and/or removing device (22) is used which removes the depositing stack (10) from a receiving station or deposits the retrieving stack (12) at a depositing station. A plurality of stacks (2) of storage goods carriers (4) stacked directly one on top of the other is stored in the automatic storage area (60). The invention finally relates to a method for handling stacks (2).
