MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641079988 A) filed by Sona College Of Technology on June 29, 2026, for Standardized Phytochemical-Loaded Crosslinker-Free Ternary Pec Biodegradable Hemostatic Sponge.

Inventors include Brindha M; and Prabakar S.

The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a standardized phytochemical-loaded crosslinker-free ternary polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) biodegradable hemostatic sponge for management of bleeding wounds. The sponge comprises chitosan, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), gelatin, and a standardized hydroalcoholic extract of Tridax procumbens. Chitosan and CMC form an ionic polyelectrolyte complex that provides a stable three-dimensional scaffold substantially in the absence of chemical crosslinking agents, while gelatin enhances structural integrity and bioadhesion. The standardized phytochemical extract is incorporated within the scaffold to provide hemostatic, antimicrobial, and wound-healing functions. The composition is processed into a porous lyophilized sponge exhibiting rapid fluid absorption, clot formation support, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. The sponge is suitable for controlling bleeding and promoting tissue repair in both human and veterinary applications. The invention further relates to a method for preparing the biodegradable hemostatic sponge through polyelectrolyte complex formation, extract incorporation, and freeze-drying.
