Abstract: ABSTRACT STEEL SLAG-INTEGRATED CHITOSAN COMPOSITE CRYOGEL FOR BONE TISSUE ENGINEERING AND ORTHOPEDIC APPLICATIONS This patent discloses a novel approach for the utilization of steel slag, an industrial byproduct, into implants/composite biomaterials for orthopedic applications. The steel slag material is utilized to develop micro- and nanoparticles, and also combined with polymers to develop 3D scaffolds and implants. We also described the procedure for cryogelation of steel-slag incorporated chitosan cryogel (CS/SLP). The Chitosan – steel slag particle composites display biocompatibility up to 20% (w/v) of steel slag particle addition (CS/20SLP). Enhanced cell proliferation and subsequent cell attachment is displayed by these cryogels. These steel slag-based composite biomaterials can be utilized either as biomaterials for tissue regeneration for bone defects (injectables, implants, etc). This work thereby introduces a functional, economical, and sustainable approach for the utilization of industrial waste in orthopedic applications. [
