Abstract: The present invention relates to a stepped geocell mattress for improving bearing capacity of soft soils using recycled plastic derived from waste plastic bottles. The stepped geocell mattress comprises a plurality of interconnected cell units with uniform diameter and varying depth arranged in a matrix, wherein the depth of the cell units decreases from a central region towards a peripheral region in a stepwise manner to form a stepped structure. The mattress is prepared by cutting waste plastic bottles into cylindrical cell units and assembling deeper cells to form a central matrix, followed by perforating outer cells to attach additional cells of progressively reduced depth around the periphery. The process is repeated to achieve the stepwise depth variation across the matrix. The developed mattress demonstrates approximately 5–10% improvement in bearing capacity while reducing material usage by about 33-48%, providing a sustainable and cost-effective solution for ground improvement.
