Abstract: The present invention is a strontium nanoparticle-doped chitosan nanofibtous composition and a method for its preparation, for use in the management of periodontal intrabony defects. Strontium nanoparticles, synthesized from a strontium chloride, are uniformly dispersed within a chitosanbased spinning solution and fabricated into a non-woven nanofibrous mat by electrospinning. The resultant construct combines the intrinsic antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxiant properties of chitosan with the sustained, dual-acting osteogenic activity of strontium ions, which stimulate osteoblast-mediated bone formation while inhibiting osteoclast-mediated resorption. The fibrous, porous architecture of the construct enables its use as a bone graft substitute, a local sustained-release drug/ion delivery carrier, and a guided tissue/bone regeneration membrane, thereby providing a multifunctional biomaterial for periodontal regenerative therapy over an extended period.
