Abstract: ABSTRACT SUBTERRANEAN GAS-SENSING SYSTEM AND METHOD USING RF BACKSCATTERED FEDERATED MODEL UPDATES A subterranean gas-sensing system (100) includes subterranean sensor nodes (110) and a surface RF platform (102) transmitting an RF carrier (106) that energizes the subterranean sensor nodes (110). Each subterranean sensor node (110) includes an antenna (202), an RF energy-harvesting circuit (206), a processor (210), a gas-sensing element (214), and an impedance-modulation circuit (212). The processor (210) derives temporal gas features from gas-sensing observations, generates a local model update (302) using a local machine-learning model, determines a quantization resolution based on harvested energy and at least one of communication quality, an anomaly score, and backscatter payload capacity, and quantizes the update. The impedance-modulation circuit (212) maps the quantized symbols to antenna impedance states, so that the RF carrier (106) is backscattered with the update encoded. An aggregation processor (116) performs federated aggregation and generates a spatial representation (306) of a subterranean gas distribution (114). (Fig. 1)
