Abstract: The present invention relates to a composite proton exchange membrane (PEM) and a method for preparing the same, wherein the composite proton exchange membrane comprises a sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) polymer matrix and sulfonated graphene dispersed within the polymer matrix, the sulfonated graphene comprising graphene sheets functionalized with sulfonic acid (–SO3H) groups, and wherein both the sulfonated polyether ether ketone and the sulfonated graphene provide proton-conducting sites within the membrane; the method of preparing the composite proton exchange membrane (PEM) comprises sulfonating polyether ether ketone (PEEK) to obtain SPEEK, preparing sulfonated graphene by exfoliating graphite in acidic medium, dissolving the SPEEK in a solvent to form a polymer solution, dispersing the sulfonated graphene into the polymer solution to form a homogeneous composite mixture, and casting the composite mixture followed by solvent removal to obtain the composite proton exchange membrane (PEM).
