MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611064898 A) filed by Career Point University Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh on May 22, 2026, for Synthesis Of Biodegradable Food Plate From Corn Husk.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the development of a biodegradable food plate prepared from corn husk and eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastic and thermocol disposable plates. In the invention, corn husk obtained from agricultural waste is subjected to sodium hydroxide (NaOH) pulping treatment to remove lignin, hemicellulose, and impurities, thereby improving the flexibility and bonding properties of the fibers. The prepared slurry is molded into plate form under heat and pressure conditions, followed by drying to obtain rigid biodegradable food plates. The molded plates are further coated with stearic acid solution to improve water repellency, moisture resistance, and durability for serving wet and semi-liquid food items. The developed biodegradable food plate is lightweight, compostable, cost-effective, and environmentally safe. The invention promotes effective utilization of agricultural waste materials, reduces plastic pollution, and provides a sustainable solution for disposable food packaging and serving applications.
