Abstract: The present invention relates to a microbial biosensor system (100) for detecting a target metabolite (110) in a urine sample (105). The microbial biosensor system (100) comprises an engineered microbial cell (115), a sensing module (120), a synthetic gene circuit (125), a reporting module (130), and a chromogenic reporter element (135). The sensing module (120) responds to the target metabolite (110), and the synthetic gene circuit (125) activates the reporting module (130) to express the chromogenic reporter element (135). The chromogenic reporter element (135) produces a visible colorimetric output (140). The engineered microbial cell (115) may be provided as immobilised engineered microbial cells (315) on an immobilised biosensor device (300) comprising a paper strip matrix (305) or a hydrogel matrix (310).
