MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611057158 A) filed by Dr. Jigyasa Gupta on May 05, 2026, for System And Method For Ai-Enabled Tooth Shade Selection Using Smartphone.
Inventors include Dr. Jigyasa Gupta; and Dr. Pankaj Datta.
The application for the patent was published on July 17, 2026, under issue no. 29/2026.
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel smartphone-based application for accurate tooth shade selection in restorative dentistry. The application utilises advanced artificial intelligence to dynamically normalise colour data captured by a smartphone camera under standardised illumination provided by an external ring light. It self-calibrates in real time to neutralise ambient light interference and hardware variations across different smartphone camera sensors without requiring any physical calibration cards or reference markers. The system captures images of the target tooth, processes them through pre-processing, self-calibration, colour analysis and shade matching modules, and delivers an objective shade recommendation compatible with commercial shade guides. This hardware- agnostic solution eliminates subjectivity, eye fatigue and metamerism associated with traditional visual shade matching. The application significantly improves aesthetic outcomes in prosthetic restorations such as layered zirconia crowns, reduces laboratory remakes, lowers costs and enhances patient satisfaction. It democratises high-accuracy dental shade selection, making it accessible, cost-effective and consistent even in resource-limited clinical settings.
