MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411098854 A) filed by Mercedes-Benz Group AG on December 13, 2024, for System And Method For Classifying Weather Conditions And Estimating Visibility Range For Vehicles Using Lidar-Sensor.

Inventors include Shabir Kumar; and Vikram Balisavira.

The application for the patent was published on July 24, 2026, under issue no. 30/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to system (102) and method for classifying current weather conditions and estimating corresponding visibility range of an ego vehicle (100). The system (102) comprises Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor (104) and controller (106). LiDAR sensor (104) captures Point Cloud Data (PCD) from at least one Field of View (FoV), where PCD corresponds to current weather condition. Controller (106) applies spatial filters to PCD to generate one or more co- ordinates comprising at least one of X-coordinate, Y-coordinate, and Z-coordinate Controller (106) identifies region of interest (RoI) within captured PCD. Controller (106) computes features and detects clusters based on alignment of the PCD with the co-ordinates to classify current weather condition into predetermined weather conditions. Estimate visibility range based on predetermined weather conditions associated with predetermined severity level. Controller (106) displays weather classification of current weather condition and estimated visibility range to user of ego vehicle (100).
