Abstract: A system for detecting scratches and identifying grade of scratches on a vehicle body (101) comprising a detecting unit (102), an identifying unit (104) and a control unit (103). The detecting unit (102) having a first sensor (201) scans the vehicle body (101) to identify colour of surface of the vehicle body (101) for detecting a scratch on the vehicle body (101). A signal corresponding to the identified colour of surface of the vehicle body (101) to the control unit (103). The control unit (103) compares the received signals with a pre-stored data pertaining to the vehicle body (101). When scratches are present on the vehicle body (101), there will be deviation from the original colour of the vehicle body (101). The control unit (103) controls the identifying unit (104) to measure a depth profile at the location of the scratch on the vehicle body (101) by means of a second sensor (202) to measure the depth profile on the vehicle body (101). The control unit (103) identifies the grade of the scratch based on the measured depth profile of the scratch on the vehicle body.
