Abstract: The present invention discloses a system and method for multimodal detection and analysis of developer cognitive difficulty during software development. The system integrates IDE interaction data including keystroke dynamics, editing behavior, execution activity, and debugging events with behavioral and physiological sensing data acquired through webcam-based and wearable devices. The collected multimodal data are synchronized and processed through feature extraction and machine learning– based cognitive state inference to identify developer states including focus, hesitation, fatigue, and confusion. Upon detection of cognitive difficulty, the system performs contextual code analysis to associate the detected state with active source code regions, compiler diagnostics, or runtime errors, and automatically provides adaptive IDE-based assistance including debugging hints, pseudocode, documentation snippets, and contextual recommendations. The invention further supports privacy-preserving edge processing, user personalization, and real-time adaptive intervention to improve developer productivity, software quality, and cognitive well- being.
