Abstract: Title: System and Method for Muzzle Based Identification of Cows A system and method for non-invasive biometric identification of an individual bovine animal from its muzzle is disclosed. An image capturing unit 201 captures an image of the animal, and a processor 204 localizes the muzzle region by a trained You Only Look Once detector and crops the detected region. The cropped muzzle is converted to grayscale, denoised in the wavelet domain, adaptively thresholded and ridge-enhanced by a biorthogonal wavelet transform. A frozen self-supervised vision transformer generates a feature embedding of the muzzle, which is matched by cosine similarity against reference embeddings of enrolled animals held in a vector database 208. A margin decision rule accepts an identity only when the best score is at least a floor and exceeds the second-best identity by a margin, otherwise the animal is reported as unrecognized and enrolled against a new identifier.
