Abstract: ABSTRACT System and Method for Real-Time Structural Health Monitoring of Civil Infrastructure The present invention is concerned with a system and method for real-time structural health monitoring of civil infrastructure by means of spatially distributed multi-modal sensor cells. The system acquires strain, vibration, displacement, inclination, acoustic, environmental and operational loading parameters and assesses the reliability of the sensor through neighbouring sensors, reference sensor nodes, redundant measurements and historical responses. A compensation module for environmental- and operational-response separates temperature, wind, traffic and other external influences from structural responses. A structural response fingerprint and state reconstruction engine determines a current structural state and compares it against an infrastructure-specific baseline to identify anomalies that are spatially and temporally correlated. In case of an anomaly, the adaptive sensing controller increases the local sampling resolution and activates additional sensing modalities to perform cross-verification. A damage progression module assesses temporal deterioration and a baseline update module sets post-event or post-maintenance structural conditions, enabling adaptive, self-calibrating, localised and continuous structural health assessment.
