MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631032518 A) filed by National Institute Of Technology Rourkela Nit Rourkela on March 18, 2026, for System For Direct Reduction Of Iron Ore Using Electrolytic Hydrogen And Method For Reducing Thereof.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a system (100) and a method (200) for direct reduction of iron ore using electrolytic hydrogen. The system (100) includes an electrolysis module, a gas mixing module, a water bubbler, a vertical reduction furnace, a temperature control module, a sample suspension mechanism configured to suspend an iron ore sample within a reaction tube of the vertical reduction furnace and an automated weighing module configured to continuously measure and records real-time changing mass of the suspended iron ore sample in situ during the reduction process. The system (100) includes a controller communicatively coupled to each of the module and configured to transmit control signals to the modules to manage operation of the system (100). The system (100) provides reduction of iron ore to lower oxide phases by using hydrogen as the sole reducing agent without generating carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
