MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411098810 A) filed by Amity University on December 13, 2024, for System For Generating Green Hydrogen Using Visible-Light-Induced Hydrogen Evolution Via Silicon Solar Cells.

Inventors include Uttam Gupta; Nitesh Kumar; Vinod Kumar Jain; and Abhishek Verma.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a system for generating green hydrogen using visible-light-induced hydrogen evolution via silicon solar cells. The system employs a specially designed silicon solar cell with an optimized PN-junction, antireflection coatings, and metallic conduction layers to enable direct water splitting under visible light without any external power source. Photogenerated electrons participate in hydrogen evolution at the water interface, while photogenerated holes are consumed through metal oxidation, thereby eliminating the requirement for conventional water oxidation reactions. The system operates as a self-powered and integrated hydrogen generator and is capable of functioning across a wide pH range, exhibiting enhanced hydrogen evolution under acidic and alkaline conditions. The system is scalable using commercially manufactured silicon solar cells and provides a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally sustainable solution for green hydrogen production.
